High Filler Loadings
|
Addition of most “fillers” increases the viscosity of the formulation. Addition of CaCO3 to loading levels above 25% make the formulation difficult to pump. The viscosity of sphere-epoxy resin mix remains pumpable, even at 50% loadings. Higher loadings allow significant cost savings.

Processing Improvements
|
The processing benefits include better mold flow, more complete filling of intricate molds and higher processing rates. Increased melt flow properties are especially important in thin-walled castings. |
Improved Physical Properties
|
Glass spheres improve hardness and impact resistance in the finished part. Tensile, compression and elongation properties are maintained, even at the higher loadings.
Fiber-filled resins exhibit less shrinkage along the fiber and more perpendicular to it. Since fibers tend to orient in the direction of the flow, warpage results. Irregularly shaped particles cause non-uniform shrinkage. This can cause part disrotation. The spherical shape responds evenly to shrinkage, so the part does not warp.
Small particle size and good mold flow combine to provide smooth finished surfaces and higher gloss. |
